Disclaimer:
The core of this website stems from examples which were originally part of an Arlington County Civic Federation Report submitted by five former Presidents of the Arlington County Civic Federation and reviewed and collected among many dozens of community members and leaders across the County. These examples have not been independently verified nor endorsed, but have hundreds of citations and footnotes many sourced directly from the County.
Whistleblower Protections:
Whistleblower laws protections and anonymity: Given the nature of the documentation compiled and the potential for retribution, example contributors are not named. Whistleblower protections are serious and enforceable
“The Fraud and Abuse Whistle Blower Protection Act § 2.2-3009. Policy It shall be the policy of the Commonwealth that citizens of the Commonwealth and employees of governmental agencies be freely able to report instances of wrongdoing or abuse committed by governmental agencies or independent contractors of governmental agencies.
Why anonymity is important when dealing with Arlington County government: When examples of serious governance issues, some potentially illegal, were published, individuals reported that the County Manager’s office made attempts to find out the sources of those examples. Furthermore, on a public forum an Arlington County Board appointed Commissioner mocked whistleblower protected anonymous sources, who disclosed secretive and potentially illegal activities by the government, as being hypocritical in nature for not disclosing their own identities as a means of public shaming. Given the severity of government activities shown throughout this website and in other sources, it is not surprising that there appears to be a lack of understanding and respect for laws, including whistleblower laws and protections.
